Yirgu Gebrehiwot MD, MSc, is Associate Professor and Consulting Obstetrician and Gynecologist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Addis Ababa University. Dr. Gebrehiwot is currently a member of the Executive Board of FIGO and President of the African Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology; he has previously served as President of the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He has conducted many training programs in abortion-related care and has also chaired committees and programs at his university, in addition to earlier management positions in the public health system. He has also authored numerous publications from his research on abortion, sexual violence, family planning, and other maternal health issues and has contributed to national guidelines of the Ethiopian Ministry of Health in these areas. He has long been dedicated to efforts to reduce unsafe abortion and has collaborated for many years with the Ipas program in Ethiopia, serving most recently as a principal investigator for the national study of abortion incidence and morbidity in Ethiopia, conducted by Ipas in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the Guttmacher Institute, and the Ethiopian Public Health Association. He has also been highly instrumental in the successful introduction of medical abortion in Ethiopia.
