Before 13 Weeks curricula

This manual provides guidance to health-care personnel on improving the quality of care available to women seeking uterine evacuation services.

This manual is a resource for trainers who lead training courses for health-care workers delivering all elements of woman-centered, comprehensive abortion care, including postabortion care. It contains all of the instructions and materials needed to help participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality care.

A set of guides and related resources providing up-to-date clinical information, activities and learning materials for trainers to use in helping health-care workers acquire the appropriate knowledge, attitudes and practical skills they need to provide first-trimester medical abortion.

At or after 13 weeks curricula

This reference guide provides information and recommendations based on evidence for dilatation and evacuation (D&E), a form of abortion that utilizes a combination of specialized forceps and vacuum aspiration to evacuate the uterus at or after 13 weeks gestation, for women who need either induced abortion, treatment of incomplete abortion or postabortion care.

This reference guide provides information and recommendations based on evidence for medical abortion at or after 13 weeks gestation, sometimes called induction abortion or termination in the second trimester, using misoprostol-based regimens (mifepristone plus misoprostol or misoprostol only) for women who need either induced abortion, treatment of incomplete abortion or postabortion care.

Training curriculum for abortion at or after 13 weeks

Medical abortion at or after 13 weeks gestation (‘second trimester’) and Postabortion care at or after 13 weeks gestation (‘second trimester’) each provide up-to-date clinical information, activities and learning materials for trainers.

Second-Trimester Abortion: A Toolkit for Service Delivery

This guidance is designed for any health facility planning to expand its abortion services to include abortions in the second trimester of pregnancy.

Postabortion care

This toolkit is designed to help district or national-level clinicians, facility managers or program managers initiate the use of misoprostol as a medical treatment for incomplete abortion or integrate misoprostol into existing postabortion care services.

This manual is designed to prepare health-care workers to provide women with high-quality postabortion care services.  It is useful for a broad audience—including clinicians, trainers, program managers and outreach workers. It provides in-depth clinical information on safe, effective options for first-trimester uterine evacuation and addresses broader service delivery and access issues, including the rights of young women, client-provider communication, and monitoring to improve services. It may be used for countries where there are no legal indications for induced abortion or where there are significant restrictions on induced abortion.

This facilitator’s guide includes activities and materials that take workshop participants—including health-care providers, policymakers, donor agencies, staff of international development organizations or community-based organizations, religious leaders or a mix of participants—through a process of examining their abortion-related values and setting behavioral intentions that are consciously aligned with those values. Often, this process results in participants setting intentions to support increased access for safe abortion care in accordance with their personal values, even for those who would not choose abortion for themselves.

This publication supplements Abortion care for young women: A training toolkit (Ipas, 2013). It modifies six values clarification and attitude transformation activities to focus specifically on young women and abortion.

This manual is intended for use in training-of-trainers courses.

Abortion is a critical but often neglected area of women’s rights, women’s health and health science education. The guide was developed for health sciences students—including students in medicine, nursing, midwifery, pharmacology, public health and other related fields—and can be adapted for other audiences too.

Organized in four parts, this training manual aims to foster an advocacy perspective in health-care providers who are involved in delivering abortion and/or postabortion care. The manual will help providers recognize their personal power as advocates and identify different circumstances and means to advocate for comprehensive abortion care to the full limits of the law.
