Direitos sexuais e reprodutivos, autonomia reprodutiva, politica e (des) respeito ao principio da laicidade (Sexual and reproductive rights, reproductive autonomy and (dis) respect of the secularism principle)
An overview (in Portuguese) of the sexual and reproductive health and rights landscape in Brazil at the end of the two-year mandate of the National Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights to Sexual and Reproductive Health at Dhesca Platform in Brazil. In the last two years advocates in this area have witnessed the intensification of conservative religious activism, focused on achieving legislative backlashes. Examples include campaigns for the approval of the Fetal Rights bill by the Commission on Constitution and Justice and the recent revoking by the Ministry of Health of ministerial ordinance 415, which regulated women’s access to safe abortion in circumstances allowed by the law. These initiatives demonstrate the need to affirm and uphold the principle of secularism in public policy to secure rights already protected by law.
