An abortion provider in Mexico on why everyone deserves access to comprehensive services
Dr. Georgina Díaz Orozco is a doctor and Ipas-trained abortion provider in Guadalajara, Mexico. She is also one of the few providers in the state of Jalisco to offer abortion care after the first trimester—due to stigma, most doctors will not perform this type of care. Many of Orozco’s patients who need abortion care after the first trimester travel to her hospital from other states because they do not receive the care they need closer to home.
“It is very important that people have access to this care,” Orozco says. “There are many people who, for multiple reasons—primarily fear—do not seek care early. It’s important to treat them as soon as possible and to provide quality care and compassion.”
Orozco is deeply affected by the interactions she has with her patients, especially those who need abortion care after the first trimester. “Being able to calm them and help them has been a great learning experience,” she says. “It is very moving for me to hear their words of gratitude once the procedure is completed.”
Orozco approaches health care through the lens of gender and human rights, and she believes that every hospital should have staff trained to provider abortion care to all, regardless of gender identity and sexuality, socioeconomic or ethnic background. “Everyone is welcome at my hospital,” she says.
