Ipas stands with Planned Parenthood
Monday, August 3, 2015
At this moment there are women around the world who need basic reproductive health care, but who have few options in health care providers. In the United States, Planned Parenthood has been an essential part of the network of reproductive health providers for women, especially those who are uninsured or on Medicaid.
In fact, one in five women in the United States has relied on a Planned Parenthood health center in her lifetime. These health centers provide a range of services from health education, family planning and cancer screenings. They also provide respectful, compassionate, safe abortion care.
Ipas is proud to have Planned Parenthood as an ally in our shared global mission to ensure that women everywhere have access to comprehensive reproductive health care. Being able to decide when and how to become a parent is a fundamental human right, and access to safe, compassionate abortion care has saved millions of women’s lives in the United States and around the world.
There is an effort in Congress to block Planned Parenthood affiliates from participating in federal health care programs including Medicaid or Title X, the national family planning program, as well as federally funded programs to test for and treat sexually transmitted infections. And yet Planned Parenthood provides a disproportionate amount of these services: the Guttmacher Institute reports that Planned Parenthood health centers serve a disproportionate share of clients in the Title X system: they comprise 13 percent of Title X clinics but serve 37 percent of clients.
This assault on federal funding for Planned Parenthood programs is part of a coordinated political attack on Planned Parenthood and on women’s access to comprehensive health services. We should not let this current attack distract from the fact that far too many women in this country and overseas lack access to comprehensive, compassionate reproductive health care.
Ipas stands with Planned Parenthood against these cynical attacks on women's health care. Ipas stands with women everywhere who have the right to compassionate reproductive-health care, including abortion.
