Midwives Matter: Spotlight on Nimatu Salifu
Nimatu Salifu is a midwife in Ghana. In Ghana, abortion is legally permitted for many reasons but many women aren’t aware of the law—and stigma still surrounds abortion in many communities. So when a neighbor came frantically knocking on her door one day asking for help because her daughter was bleeding heavily, Nimatu knew to ask the girl privately about abortion. The girl had attempted to terminate an unintended pregnancy and needed care. Nimatu quickly rushed her to the clinic and the girl recovered. Now, the girl is in school studying midwifery and continues to keep in touch. Nimatu’s story isn’t so unusual—many of the Ipas young midwife contest winners drew their inspiration from midwives they’d encountered in their lives and from the connections midwives build in their communities.
