Midwives Matter: Spotlight on Ifeoma Akaniro
Ifeoma Akaniro, a midwifery student in Nigeria, wrote a story of a young girl’s unsafe abortion, the stigma she faced, and ultimately, nonjudgmental midwifery care that saved her life. “In my country, it’s not easy accessing abortion.” Having seen firsthand young women and girls who would have died or sustained life-long injuries from complications from unsafe abortion had it not been for midwives, she vowed to become a midwife at a young age. Now, she feels moved to advocate for abortion care as part of midwifery training. “It’s included but not emphasized,” she says. And, most importantly, she urges other midwives to provide nonjudgmental care.
