Edford Mutuma, who died Monday, May 30, was a champion and tireless advocate for the reproductive rights of women and young people.

It was Ipas’s privilege to have Edford serve as the Country Director for Zambia – he brought more than 15 years of experience in population and development work in Africa, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and youth and development.

“Edford’s commitment to advancing women’s health was evident in his advocacy work at the national, regional and international level,” says Ipas President and CEO John Hetherington.

Edford was the executive director of Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia, the first president of the Africa Youth and Adolescent Network on Population and Development and the the executive director of Youth Vision Zambia. As country director for Ipas Zambia, Edford’s goal was to ensure that all women and girls in Zambia would be able to access comprehensive reproductive health care.

“Edford was a valuable member of the Ipas global team. He came to the position of country director with an open heart and unfailing dedication—he will be deeply missed by his staff, colleagues and the friends he made during his time at Ipas,” says Hetherington.
