#NereaSpeaks: pop song generates public discussion of abortion in Kenya

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

Kenyan pop band Sauti Sol has been at the top of the charts with their song "Nerea." In the song, a man is asking his pregnant girlfriend not to have an abortion, arguing that their child could be the next Mandela or President Obama. Feminists and reproductive rights advocates criticized the song for creating misinformation and increasing stigma around abortion, leading to an unusually open and public debate on the issue in mainstream and social media. Ipas Africa Alliance Senior Advisor Naisola Likimani participated in a panel discussion with the band on KTN, Kenya's national television network to discuss the song and the importance of ensuring access to sex education, contraception and safe abortion care.
