Women around the world have sought abortions throughout history. Yet, abortion continues to be highly controversial, stigmatized, and often hidden, especially in countries where it is legally restricted. Where safe abortion services are not available, women may seek unsafe abortions, often with grim consequences for them, as well as their families and their communities.

This presentation package, created by Family Care International and Ipas, aims to foster understanding of this issue, enhance public discussion, promote partnerships, and encourage the provision of safe abortion services to the extent allowed by law. It is based primarily on the World Health Organization’s 2003 publication: Safe Abortion: Technical and Policy Guidance for Health Systems.

This presentation package is an advocacy and information tool that includes everything you need to learn about unsafe abortion and make presentations on this topic. The presentation package is offered in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The package provides individuals and organizations advocacy tools that can be used with a range of audiences, from policy-makers to health care providers, from members of the media to members of the community.
