Violence, unwanted pregnancy and abortion: A neglected women’s rights issue

June 15, 2000

Maria deBruyn

Sexual Violence. Gender. Abortion. Laws and Policies. Reproductive Health.

2000

This brochure explores the little-recognized connections between sexual and physical violence and abortion. Women who have been raped may be more likely to have an unintended pregnancy and choose abortion, or they may miscarry after an assault. This paper also briefly discusses how women in conflict situations, the HIV-positive and women seeking postabortion care experience violence or coercion related to abortion.
