The faces behind the figures: The tragic effects of the criminalization of therapeutic abortion in Nicaragua

January 15, 2008

Sara Gómez, MPH, Marta María Blandón, MSc

Abortion. Laws and Policies. Reproductive Rights. Human Rights. Reproductive Health.

2007

This 40-page booklet tells the stories of Carmen and Esperanza, two women who died from pregnancy-related illnesses after Nicaragua enacted a law prohibiting abortion under any circumstance. Both of these women’s lives, as well as the lives and health of many other women, might have been saved if they had had access to reproductive health care, including therapeutic abortion. Therapeutic abortion was legal in Nicaragua until October 2006, when the National Assembly voted to eliminate the only exception to their country’s abortion law.
