| Description | The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, which governs the provision of abortion services in India, was enacted in 1971 to address the country's high rate of maternal mortality and morbidity from unsafe abortion. This two-page factsheet highlights the main features of the MTP Act, which was amended in 2002, as well as introducing the updated MTP Rules, which outline the required process for approving new MTP sites and certifying MTP providers.
