| Description | Unsafe abortion is a leading cause of death in Asia, and the region accounts for half of all global abortion-related maternal deaths. While the ICPD undoubtedly served as a catalyst for increased discussion on family planning, reproductive health, and the status of women, this report shows that implementation of the Cairo recommendations have been impeded by persistent social, cultural, economic and political factors, combined with the presence of vocal and powerful religious and conservative entities in the region.
