Today marks the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers. These providers often face harassment and abuse, and sometimes risk their lives, to offer a legal medical procedure to hundreds of thousands of American women.

Because magazine interviewed medical students training to become abortion providers to highlight the tremendous challenges they face. “I’d never really thought about things like, ‘Will I need a bullet proof vest? What will I need to do to protect my family? What kind of security system will I need in my house?’” one student said.

As anti-abortion rights forces continue to target providers and federal funding is cut by conservative politicians, the number of abortion providers is dwindling. What does this mean for the roughly 1.5 million American women who choose to have an abortion each year?

Thank an abortion provider today and support women’s rights to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health, including abortion, by making a donation to or visiting the following organizations online:

Medical Students for Choice

NARAL

National Abortion Federation

National Network of Abortion Funds

Planned Parenthood

Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health
