An important part of Ipas’s mission is to ensure that health-care providers have the training they need to provide safe reproductive health-care services to women. For the past several years, Ipas has been a partner with Medical Students for Choice, an organization dedicated to creating tomorrow’s abortion providers and pro-choice physicians. On November 14th and 15th, students from around the country will be gathering in Salt Lake City, Utah, to share information and learn from reproductive health experts at the Medical Students for Choice 2009 Annual Meeting.
Medical professionals who chose to become abortion providers face challenging circumstances: lack of training, lack of federal funding, and often lack of support from their communities. Medical students rarely receive any information about or training on abortion during their studies. Students who are interested in learning or talking about abortion on campus receive little support from school administrators and even face threats from anti-choice groups. Medical Students for Choice helps students receive adequate training and information on reproductive health choices in a supportive environment, including externships with reproductive health professionals so students can learn about the abortion procedure and how to perform it safely and effectively.
