On International Women’s Day, Ipas launched the trailer and website for its upcoming documentary, Not Yet Rain. Not Yet Rain, a Lisa Russell film produced in association with Ipas, will be released in April 2009. The film explores abortion in Ethiopia through the voices of women. With their touching stories, the viewer sees the important role that safe abortion care plays in the overall health of the women and their families.
Not Yet Rain is the result of a partnership between Ipas and independent filmmaker Lisa Russell. Russell traveled to Ethiopia in 2008 and recorded interviews with women, men, community leaders and health care providers in the capitol of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, as well as the rural town of Zeway.
While a law enacted in 2006 marked great progress in the journey for reproductive freedom in Ethiopia, Not Yet Rain shows that more can be done. Women continue to die from unsafe abortions. Additional training for health workers and increased availability of care could save the lives of women in Ethiopia and around the world.
