A: The abortion magazine
A — The Abortion Magazine will help spread the message that abortion is a health and human rights issue.

There’s no shortage of rhetoric surrounding abortion. But there is a noticeable lack of reader-friendly publications that combine the best scientific evidence about abortion with the best evidence from women’s lives.

Ipas is addressing that void with the launch of its new magazine: A — The Abortion Magazine. It’s not an academic journal or a glossy magazine you’d see on newsstands, but it blends elements of both into a publication that deals seriously with reproductive-health issues.

Ipas President Elizabeth Maguire believes the magazine will help spread the message that abortion is a health and human rights issue.

In a letter introducing the magazine, she wrote: “We live in a political climate where opinion leaders and even the general public are reluctant to talk about abortion issues except in the context of a political fight or campaign. It seems we have forgotten why access to legal and safe abortion is crucial for women’s health and survival. Abortion is not a political tool, but a health-care procedure that can mean the difference between life and death for tens of thousands of women around the world each year.”

The debut Fall/Winter 2005 issue focuses on the sexual and reproductive-health needs of adolescents, now the world’s largest age group. Articles include interviews with Mexican and Nigerian advocates; a story about sexual education programs in the United States; and a piece about why girls choose unsafe abortion.
