International Women's Day 2010
Share/Save/Bookmark

On International Women’s Day, Ipas staff are joining thousands of women and men in New York for 54th annual meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). The Commission was created in 1946 to promote women’s rights in politics, economics, education, social justice and civil society. This year the focus of the CSW will be the 15-year review of the Beijing Platform for Action, the international agreement that arose out of the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women.

According to the CSW’s Web site, this year “Emphasis will be placed on the sharing of experiences and good practices, with a view to overcoming remaining obstacles and new challenges, including those related to the Millennium Development Goals.” In addition to the official meetings held March 1-12 to review nations’ progress towards keeping the promises made in the Platform for Action, non-governmental organizations are holding side events to highlight particular issue areas such as the benefits of investing in family planning, gender equality and the Millennium Development Goals and youth.

Ipas and the International Planned Parenthood Federation sponsored a panel on the unmet needs of young women to prevent pregnancy and access safe abortion care. The  Platform for Action "...acknowledged that young women are even more vulnerable than older women to maternal morbidity and mortality." Senior Advisor Maria De Bruyn described the panel in detail in a blog on RH Reality Check
