Ipas is deeply saddened by the tragic aftermath of the recent earthquake in Haiti. There are a number of excellent organizations providing disaster relief – a list can be found at http://www.interaction.org/crisis-list/earthquake-haiti.

You can also support PROFAMIL, the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) affiliate that has been providing sexual and reproductive health care in Haiti since 1984. In some parts of the country, PROFAMIL is the only health-care provider, so our support is crucial to ensuring that basic and emergency health-care services are restored.

In addition, women generally bear the burden of catastrophes such as the earthquake in Haiti. They are usually the primary family caregivers, many are pregnant at the time of the catastrophic event, and following a disaster, women are at an increased risk of sexual and intimate partner violence. These factors render women particularly vulnerable to disaster, making our support to organizations such as PROFAMIL all the more important.
